Reflections From Meriç
(2013)
4 minutes

In this short film, commissioned for Danish national television, the viewer is taken on a journey along the river Meriç, which forms the border between Turkey and Greece. Every year, thousands of migrants attempt to cross the river, and every year many drown in their effort to enter Europe.

The film is narrated by Harim, a Turkish fisherman who has repeatedly witnessed migrants in danger. Harim chose to remain anonymous, as any association with the film could result in the authorities revoking his special permit to fish on the river. Caught in a moral dilemma, he describes how current laws forbid him from helping migrants in any way.

The film is shot close to the surface of the water. This low vantage point was chosen to suggest the river as it might appear from the position of a drowned body, drifting downstream. The perspective places the viewer inside the landscape itself, aligning the camera with those who do not make it across.
