End of Season - trailer
(2013)

End of Season is part of Nikolaj Larsen’s ongoing series of works that trace migration routes to and through Europe. It was filmed in Üyüklütatar Köyüa, a small farming village in northwestern Turkey on the River Meriç, along the Turkish–Greek border. Until recently, the river was one of the busiest crossing points into Europe for undocumented migrants.

The villagers have witnessed countless people pass through—across their fields and towards the water. Many have also witnessed drowned people - bodies carried by the river-current are a grim, recurring presence.

While border crossing is a recurring theme, the film expands the notion of migration beyond Europe’s external borders. Like many rural communities, Üyüklütatar Köyüa is losing its younger generation to the cities, where factory work offers the only steady income. On the village outskirts, a Roma camp houses internal migrants who arrive each year as seasonal labourers.
