Fade to Light is a one-minute work shot on 16mm colour film: a close-up of a burning candle on a black background. Over the 11-metre long filmstrip, Nikolaj Larsen has abraded the emulsion with sandpaper, gradually adding pressure to remove the image. The intervention extends across the optical soundtrack, where it produces an increasingly intense wash of white noise. By the end, the scratches have fully erased the motif, leaving only brightness and noise.
